‘We Were Sitting on a Bench Resting Our Tired Legs Late in the Day'

Muse at the Museum #
Visiting New York City for the first time, a person spent a day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with their sister. While taking a break on a bench, a guard approached them. Expecting a reprimand, they were surprised when the guard asked if they had seen the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition. Curious, they rushed to the exhibition and learned about Yvette Guilbert, a French cabaret performer and one of Toulouse-Lautrec’s muses. Guilbert was depicted in the paintings with exaggerated features, appearing twice her age.
